Why Are You Seeing Meta AI on Your Facebook Profile — and What Should You Do?

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, has been adding artificial intelligence features throughout its apps. In many cases, you didn't download anything or turn anything on — the features are being integrated directly into the platforms.
What Is Meta AI?
Meta AI is Meta's artificial intelligence assistant. It can answer questions, help write or rewrite content, summarize information, generate ideas and perform other AI-powered tasks.
On Facebook, Meta AI can appear in places such as Search, Messenger and your Facebook feed. Meta says there's nothing users need to install to access it because it is built directly into Facebook.
Does Seeing Meta AI Mean Your Account Has Been Hacked?
No.
Simply seeing Meta AI on Facebook or Instagram does not mean someone hacked your account or installed something on your phone.
It is part of Meta's growing use of artificial intelligence across its platforms.
However, it is a good reminder to check what information you're sharing publicly.
Is Meta Using Your Facebook Posts for AI?
This is the part people should understand.
Meta says that publicly shared Facebook and Instagram content, including public posts, photos and text, can be used to develop and improve its generative AI models.
Meta also says interactions you have directly with its AI features can be used in developing its AI systems.
That doesn't mean Meta AI suddenly has access to everything on your phone.
Meta states that it does not use the content of ordinary private messages between friends and family to train its AI unless someone in the conversation chooses to share those messages with an AI feature.
What Should You Do?
There's no reason to panic, but this is a good time for a quick Facebook and Instagram privacy check.
1. Review who can see your posts. If you don't want something publicly available, make sure the audience isn't set to Public.
2. Review older public posts. You may have posts, photos or comments from years ago that are still publicly visible.
3. Check your profile information. Review your phone number, email address, birthday, hometown, family information and other personal details. Ask yourself whether each item really needs to be public.
4. Be careful what you share with Meta AI. Treat an AI conversation differently from a private conversation with a friend. Avoid entering passwords, financial information, private client information or other sensitive information into an AI assistant.
5. Check your Facebook and Instagram privacy settings periodically. Social media platforms change frequently. A setting you checked a year or two ago may be worth reviewing again.
Can You Completely Turn Off Meta AI?
Meta AI has become integrated into Facebook and other Meta apps, so there isn't necessarily one simple switch that removes every AI feature.
Depending on where you live and which Meta services you're using, you may have options to mute certain Meta AI features, adjust how you interact with them, change privacy settings or object to certain uses of your information.
The options available can also change as Meta updates its services.
Don't Believe Every "Copy and Paste This" Facebook Post
Whenever Facebook makes a privacy or AI change, posts usually begin circulating telling people to copy and paste a statement onto their profile to prevent Facebook or Meta from using their information.
Posting a privacy statement on your timeline doesn't change your account settings or Meta's terms.
If you want to protect your information, use the actual privacy and account controls provided by Facebook and Instagram instead.
The Bottom Line
Seeing Meta or Meta AI appearing around your Facebook or Instagram account doesn't automatically mean something is wrong with your account.
It means artificial intelligence is becoming a much bigger part of the social media platforms we already use.
The best response isn't panic — it's awareness.
Take a few minutes to review your privacy settings, pay attention to what you post publicly and be thoughtful about what information you share with AI tools.
Technology keeps changing. Understanding those changes is one of the best ways to stay safer online.
It Doesn't Have to Be Complicated.
