It’s Official: AI Is Being Renamed SI — But What Does That Really Mean?

AI has a new name in the U.S. executive branch: SI, or Super Intelligence. Here's what changed—and whether businesses need to change anything.

Just when everyone was finally getting used to the term AI, there's a new abbreviation to learn: SI.

On September 29, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. executive branch to use “Super Intelligence” (SI) in place of “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents and other non-statutory materials. The White House

But before you start replacing every mention of AI on your website, there's an important distinction.

AI Hasn't Disappeared

The executive order changes the terminology used by the federal executive branch. It does not mean that the entire technology industry—or the rest of the world—has officially stopped calling it Artificial Intelligence.

In fact, the order currently defines SI using the existing federal legal definition of artificial intelligence. It also specifically says previously issued regulations, presidential actions, contracts, grants and historical documents don't have to be rewritten. The White House

So your ChatGPT didn't suddenly become a completely different technology overnight.

For now, think of this primarily as a change in terminology within the U.S. federal government, rather than AI itself suddenly becoming something entirely new.

Why Call It “Super Intelligence”?

The administration's position is that the term Artificial Intelligence no longer adequately describes what today's advanced systems can do.

The executive order says modern systems increasingly amplify human creativity and capabilities and argues that “Super Intelligence” better describes their potential and rapidly advancing capabilities. The White House

President Trump had previewed the terminology a week earlier during his September 22 address to the United Nations, referring to Artificial Intelligence as being “hereinafter officially called ‘Super Intelligence.’” The White House

Does SI Mean Today's AI Is Smarter Than Humans?

Not necessarily—and this is where the terminology could become confusing.

Traditionally, technology discussions have used terms such as AI, AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), and artificial superintelligence to describe different concepts or levels of capability.

Under this new federal terminology, however, SI is being used as the government's replacement term for technologies already covered by its definition of AI. The White House

So seeing “Super Intelligence” in a federal document doesn't by itself mean scientists have suddenly announced the arrival of a machine that is smarter than humans at everything.

What Does This Mean for Small Businesses?

Probably very little immediately.

You don't need to rush through your website replacing every reference to AI with SI.

People are already familiar with searches such as:

AI tools, AI website design, AI search, AI-generated content and artificial intelligence.

Those phrases aren't going to disappear from everyday language overnight.

From a website and SEO standpoint, businesses should pay attention to how people actually search. If SI becomes widely adopted outside the federal government, it may eventually make sense to incorporate both terms into website content.

For now, something like “AI (Artificial Intelligence), now referred to as SI (Super Intelligence) by the U.S. executive branch” can help readers understand both terms without confusing them.

And Yes, We Have Another Tech Acronym to Remember

SEO. AI. AGI. And now SI.

Technology certainly doesn't make it easy to keep up.

But that's exactly why small-business owners shouldn't feel like they have to understand every new technology term the moment it appears.

The important thing is understanding what changes actually affect your business—and which ones are simply changes in terminology.

For the moment, AI is still the term most people know.

But don't be surprised if you start seeing SI — Super Intelligence appearing more frequently, particularly on U.S. government websites and communications.

And if SI eventually becomes the term everyone uses?

We'll update our vocabulary again.

I’d keep AI in your SEO keywords for now rather than replacing it with SI, because the terminology change applies specifically to the executive branch and doesn't establish SI as a universal replacement.
